Things to Know Before Selecting a Contractor & Purchasing a Pool
1. Licensing & Insurance
Always confirm your contractor is licensed in your state (FL GC, DC BB, MD MHIC, VA Class B, etc.).
Verify that they carry general liability and workers' compensation insurance. This protects you from liability if something goes wrong on-site.
2. Experience with Pool Type & Materials
Not all contractors specialize in the same pool construction.
Ask: “How many pools like mine (rectangular/spa/ICF) have you built?”
At R&R Pools, we focus on Nudura ICF-built pools — meaning strength, efficiency, and speed are our standard, not the exception.
3. Project Timeline
A common frustration is long delays.
Ask for a realistic schedule (start date, excavation, formwork, plaster, inspection, fill).
Beware of vague promises like “we’ll start soon” or “done in a couple of months.”
Once we obtain the permit, it will take approximately 4-8 weeks to install your pool. The longer duration is typically when there are site challenges such as access to the pool site, removal of large rocks, installation of retaining walls, etc. Sometimes we might have to prep the area prior to ensure proper safety for the construction crews.
4. What’s Included in the Price
Many quotes don’t include essentials like permits, excavation, decking, fencing, or pool equipment.
Always request a detailed, itemized proposal.
At R&R Pools, we give you clear upfront numbers, so you don’t get blindsided later.
5. Energy Efficiency & Maintenance
A pool is a long-term investment, not just a one-time cost.
Ask: “What technology do you use to reduce heating and pumping costs?”
Variable-speed pumps, LED lighting, and ICF construction can save thousands over the life of the pool.
6. Warranties & Aftercare
A good builder should provide warranties on structure, equipment, and finish materials.
Clarify what’s covered, for how long, and who honors the warranty (builder vs. manufacturer).
7. References & Portfolio
Any quality contractor should provide photos of past projects and references from recent clients.
Online reviews are great, but nothing beats a direct conversation with someone who’s lived through the build.
8. Permits & Code Compliance
Pools require municipal permits for safety, fencing, and sometimes zoning setbacks.
Ask: “Who pulls the permits — you or me?”
At R&R Pools, we handle all compliance from start to finish.
9. Ongoing Costs
Beyond construction, consider:
Monthly electricity for pumps/heaters
Chemicals or salt
Cleaning/maintenance service
A good contractor should walk you through true ownership costs so there are no surprises.
